New home exchange movie 'The Holiday' starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Eli Wallach

We're eagerly looking forward to the Christmas holidays and this wonderful new movie which opens in Australia on Boxing Day.  Home exchange is all about having an extraordinary experience - a theme that 'The Holiday' captures beautifully.  While HomeLink may have been around for 53 years, the growing popularity of home exchange holidays is really beginning to catch on - as you can see, now even Hollywood is taking notice!

In Nancy Meyers' "The Holiday", a romantic comedy from the director of Something's Gotta Give and What Women Want, two women trade homes only to find that a change of address can change their lives.

Iris (Kate Winslet) is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman. Across the globe, Amanda (Cameron Diaz) realises the man she lives with has been unfaithful.  Two women who have never met and live 6,000 miles apart, find themselves in the exact same place.    They meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively switch homes for the holiday.  Iris moves into Amanda's L.A. house in sunny California as Amanda arrives in the snow covered English countryside.  Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find the last thing either wants or expects: a new romance. Amanda is charmed by Iris' handsome brother Graham (Jude Law), and Iris, with inspiration from legendary screenwriter Arthur (Eli Wallach), mends her heart when she meets film composer Miles (Jack Black).

"I have found almost everything ever written about love to be true.  Shakespeare said, 'Journeys end in lovers meeting'. What an extraordinary thought." - Iris (Kate Winslet)

HomeLink office - our Christmas break, 16 December 2006 to 7 January 2007

It's that time of year again, when your HomeLink Australia team takes their own well-earned holiday.

Just a reminder - if you have been thinking of joining our global community some time in 2007, why don't you get in early? Join before 16 December so that you will have access to the members areas during your Christmas break, and northern hemisphere members will be able to contact you during their Christmas break. And, another great reason to join before the office closes for Christmas is ...

New membership fees - January 2007

We mentioned last month that for the first time since May 2004, there will be an increase in HomeLink Australia membership fees next year.  The new fees will be effective 1 January 2007, reflecting increased local costs and a near-doubling in international expenses in the previous 3 years.

New fees (from 1/1/07):

Membership - $250
Membership plus Books - $300
2nd home listing - $120

Another great reason for you to join before we close for Christmas!!

HomeImprovements - tips and advice

Photo restrictions - no second homes

A reminder for all prospective members who have second homes:  if you do not have a second listing with us (current fee $110), you may not include photos of a second home in your listing.  Although you may mention in your listing that "We have a second home available in ... ", this is the only permissible reference - you may not provide more details than this in your listing.  Please note that additional information and photos pertaining to second homes will be removed, and we ask that all members respect this aspect of HLI policy.

There are several positive reasons why taking out a second listing is a great idea.  Firstly, without a second listing, other members worldwide cannot find your second home by specific searches - they may only 'chance' upon it at best.  Secondly, mixing details/photos of two different homes inevitably results in confusion over exactly which home you are offering, and when.  With HomeLink's improved website search facilities, it is now very important that separate homes be displayed exclusively in separate listings.  There is also a clear link between both listings where a member has two homes on offer.

An outstanding response!!

In a departure from the usual member story, this month we've decided to include a small collection of member emails we received earlier this year, as part of an overwhelming response to our request for members who would be willing to participate in a couple of media stories about HomeLink.  We were excited and delighted by the enthusiastic show of support from our loyal members, and would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and say a very big "Thank You" to every single one of you who responded so positively.  Space only permits us to include a small sample of your responses - our thanks go out to you ALL!

Hi, we have just got back from a major trip from UK, we had 3 home swaps in UK in the one trip. We also traveled with a 2 and 4 year old with us.  Wow what a hall!!  We traveled right across England from Devon County to Scotland to Ireland and back, around 20,000 kilometres in 4 months, 85 castles and a hell of a lot of B&Bs to boot.  I loved it, my wife ... well just put it this way, I'm still sucking up to her as she ended up being the baby sitter.  Any way if we can help we would love to as people still look at us as if we're strange.  They say "You went where? For how long? With two kids at that age? Are you all there?"  The answer to that must be "no".  But you only have one life, LIVE IT.  Ok thanks, hope we can help. By the way we don't live in the grand palace but do have a nice three bed with a spa on the Sunshine Coast 5 min from the Beach

Jason & Meredith

We did exchanges to San Diego and Quebec last year and the year before to Washington DC, British Virgin Isles (Virgin Gorda) and Vancouver. In 2003 we went to UK, Germany and Paris.

Jill

Our first exchange was last year to Norway and we are waiting for our family from Spain to come this weekend.  A second Spanish family will be here all of March.  We hope to travel to Spain in Sept/Oct next year.  We will then catch up with our Norwegian exchange family.  We will be searching for more exchanges in Europe before our trip.  So far everything has worked very well for us.

Ian and Silvi

I was in the UK for ten months from October last year and did three exchanges in that time - two for three months each (one in Kent and one in Middlesbrough) and one for ten days in the Yorkshire Dales.

Jennie

We did a home exchange in England for 3 months last year. Two for three months each (one in Kent and one in Middlesbrough) and one for ten days in the Yorkshire Dales.

Stephanie and John

Our family of four exchanged with a family of four from Canada for a month last Christmas, including car exchange of late model cars.

Lindsay

We exchanged to Oxford, UK in 2004/5 and recently returned from an exchange to Hobart.  Both times we have had wonderful experiences with the house and car exchange.  This time we were fortunate to meet our swapees - and we had a terrific dinner and chat.  Now we are looking for exchanges in UK and France for the Rugby World Cup in 2007 - and feel confident it will all work out beautifully.

Joanne and Kim

We were in the USA (Colorado Springs) last year. This year in South Africa (Howick near Pietermaritzberg) and three years ago in Axat (Southern France).

Jacqui

We did an exchange to California/Vancouver Island and Alaska a couple of months ago for 2 months.

Roz

Hi we did a home exchange just two years ago to UK for 5 weeks and are about to do another in 5 weeks time to the UK again.

Faye

Last year in the US - Martha's Vineyard, Boston and New York and the year before in the UK - a village just outside Bath.

Ann

We have an exchange in place for Christmas to New York for 4 weeks. This is our first and the couple we are exchanging with their 5th.

Julie

We think home exchange is wonderful because we merge with the culture of a country or area and learn so much. We would not consider any other way to holiday.

Richard

We have done 1 exchange this year to magnetic island in July (fantastic experience) and we are doing an exchange with English people in January: they are then using our beach home and we will use their house in Spain in June.

Kees & Gilles

We were in Europe for six months last year and did six hospitality/home/non-simultaneous exchanges.  But, they were in France, Germany and Austria.  Next May we are off to Italy, and are currently working on an exchange in Scotland for 2008.

Fran

We have just returned from a trip of consecutive swaps in America, Germany & Sweden. We had a marvellous time & have been recommending this organisation.

Anne

We have recently taken early retirement and joined Homelink last Oct ... have loved home exchange!!! We spent all of September 2006 in a delightful cottage with beautiful gardens in a small village called Sparford in the UK and 3 weeks in August in a country property in Belgium. We also spent 3 weeks in Auckland in May, again delightful home and garden.

Tess and Dave

We have just completed a Homelink holiday with house swaps and hospitality stays in Canada and West Coast of America.

Barbara
PS We have just farewelled our Canadian friends today who have stayed with us for 4 days.

We did an exchange with a couple from San Francisco last year for three weeks and are doing two exchanges next year, one in Syros a small Greek island, and another to Regensburg in Bavaria Germany.

Colin

Thank you to all our members. We wish you a very Merry Xmas and a Happy HomeLink New Year!!

United Kingdom

"Until recently England was generally thought of as a gentle, fabled land freeze-framed sometime in the 1930s, home of the post office, country pub and vicarage. It's now better known for vibrant cities with great nightlife and attractions, contrasted with green and pleasant countryside." - Lonely Planet read more

With the release of the movie The Holiday on Boxing Day, we thought it timely to mention one of our favourite destinations, sunny Ol' Blighty.  Now while we hold out only the faintest hope of running into Cameron Diaz (weep), catching up with HomeLink UK organisers Jon and Caroline is always on the cards. Especially now that they have beautiful twin boys!  They're only due home from hospital in the next few days, so we know just where to track them down for one of those memorable holiday photo opportunities.

Jon and Caroline took over HomeLink UK from Jim and Heather just three years ago, and have already become fabulous, innovative additions to our community.  As a loyal member of the English cricket supporter's Barmy Army, Jon really enjoyed serving it up to us when the Poms finally won the Ashes back last year.  We know he's quaking in his boots after the First Test thrashing this week.  So we strongly encourage you to catch up with Jon on your next exchange to England ... even if only to politely remind him of the imminent Ashes loss this year!
