Our house was originally built in 1979 as a five bedroom home for our family of six. Adjacent to the house is a two-car carport with an electric door.
As happens with many such families, the six eventually became two and so the interior of the house was extensively renovated during the 2000's and two of the bedrooms were converted into an office/study and a craft room.
While we, ourselves are somewhat ancient, our house regularly has to cope with the hordes of grandchildren that descend upon it. So it will, I'm sure, provide a great atmosphere for your family, whether they are just two or many more.
The whole house is quite cosy with zoned electric heating in all rooms and double-glazing throughout. The heating is provided via low-energy radiant heating in the ceiling of each room. Each room has its own individual thermostat control.
The overall area of the house is about 200 metres square, with a verandah right along the front, which faces north-east—in the southern hemisphere this is facing the morning sun.
Entry to the house is through an open hallway, from which one can either proceed ahead into the family room or step down into a sunken lounge with a small flatscreen television and stereo system. In the same open area a second step-up leads up to a formal dining area, with a piano.
Through a sliding door from the dining room there is a large fully electric kitchen including refrigerator/freezer, wall oven, microwave, glass cooktop, coffee pod dispensers and dishwasher. It has about six metres of benchspace.
Adjacent to the kitchen and in the same open plan area is a large (28m2) family area with comfortable lounge chairs, an informal pine dining setting for six and a smart television with stereo and playstation 3. While we do not have cable TV, we do have streaming facilities via the PS3, which we often use for watching movies.
The master bedroom, contains a king-size bed and an en-suite with shower, wash basin and toilet.
The second bedroom has a queen-size bed and the third bedroom has two single beds.
As mentioned earlier, the fourth and fifth bedrooms have been converted into an office and a craft room, respectively—although the craft room also has a single bed, so there is ample room for seven visitors to sleep.
Our suburban block is fairly steeply sloped up from the street to the back fence—an overall rise of about seven metres. Its area is around 900 metres square.
Both the front and back gardens are extensively terraced. This was originally done to ensure our children had adequate flat surfaces on which to play.
The front garden is largely planted to native Australian shrubs with three quite large eucalypts on the street level. At the house level there is about 50 square metres of lawn area, directly adjacent to the front verandah, which runs along the whole width of the house.
The back garden has a smaller lawn area and some small plantings, as well as a small fish pond, which is covered by a steel mesh to ensure child safety.
The covered rear deck has a natural gas barbecue and a table tennis table.
If you are a golfer, there is a golf set available for you to use.
The Murrumbidgee Golf Club is the closest club to our home—about three kilometres away. However, I prefer to use the much older Queanbeyan—about 20 kilometres away, where I am a member. There are many other high quality golf clubs within easy access to our home. These include Royal Canberra, Capital, Fairbairn and Federal Golf Clubs all within 15 kilometres of Wanniassa.
There are also tennis racquets for your use and there are plenty of tennis courts in the local area.
To make your stay easier, we would be prepared to negotiate with you the use of our cars, while you are staying in our home. These are a Volkswagen Passat sedan, a Volkswagen Polo hatch and a Kia Sorento SUV. At present the Kia is fitted out for travel across deserts, so it has only two seats. The rear seats have been replaced by a refrigerator and various other pieces of equipment to facilitate camping in remote areas. However, if you indicated that you wanted to use the SUV for some off-road exeriences, we could arrange to reinstall some of the seats. Neither of the other cars would be available for going off-road. They are strictly town and highway vehicles.
If you are keen on the hiking and the outdoors, you could try climbing Mount Taylor. It is a ten minute drive to the foot of the mountain from our home and then a twenty minute ascent by foot to the summit. From here you will get a panoramic view over the Woden and Tuggeranong valleys to Canberra city and beyond. You can also hike along trails in the Namadgi National Park—this requires that you obtain permits from the administration office of the Park, especially in the winter as the park is quite mountainous and subject to sudden changes in temperature.
If you are keen on snow sports, Thredbo and Blue Cow resorts in the Australian Alps are within easy driving distance (about two hours), or there is a daily bus to and from Jindabyne and Thredbo.
The beautiful beaches of the New South Wales South Coast are about one hour's drive from our home. These are probably the most picturesque surf beaches in all of Australia.
Australia's two largest cities are linked by freeways to Canberra. Sydney (population 5.1 million) is about 3 hours (310kms) from our home and Melbourne (population 4.5 million) is a longer drive at around 8 hours (680kms).
