Our house is a modernised croft house in the Outer Hebrides in the hamlet of Crowlista, looking out over a vast beach towards the mountains of Harris. It is 40 metres from the Uig Sands, a white sand beach 1 mile wide on which the famous Viking hoard of the Uig chessmen was found in the 19th century.

On the remote and mountainous West coast of the isle of Lewis (reached by ferry from Ullapool or Skye on the mainland) our house is in an area of outstanding natural beauty and great archaeological interest. The landscape is great for coatsal and inland walks with dramatic views, and there are prehistoric douns, brochs and wheelhouses nearby as well as the Callanish stone circle, which rivals Stonehenge for size and significance. The white sand beaches of the Outer Hebrides are famous, and several beautiful and private beaches are within 10 mins drive.

We are 5 mins by car/ 15 mins walk from the only shop within a 40 mile radius, which is an excellent local cooperative supplying fresh meat, fish, bakery and fruit. The largest town in the Hebrides, the fishing port of Stornoway, is 50 mins by car, and has excellent supermarkets and every kind of specialist shop. Locally, 5 mins drive from our house, is a village with the local community centre where ceilidh dances and dinners are held every 6 weeks, and there are 2 good local restaurants.

On the West coast of Lewis you can visit restored thatched blackhouses to see how Celtic people lived,as well as Norse mills, a pottery and art gallery. You can visit the Isle of Harris, now well known for the Castaway series about a community on Taransay, and you can take a trip from our local harbour to the extraordinary and remote island of St Kilda, a world heritage site. You can take excellent boat trips to explore local deserted islands and seal colonies, and you can hire canoes and go wind surfing on Uig Sands. Uig is big for salmon fishing in season.
